How to move fast

Our vision was to help merchants improve the in-store experience and boost customer satisfaction.

We aimed to do this by building a mobile app for store staff—one that offers quick access to customer and product insights, and lets employees process sales from anywhere on the shop floor.

We approached the project with a startup mindset - fail fast, learn often
As part of the team, I played a key role in scoping the work into small, meaningful releases—each designed to deliver value without overwhelming users. It helped us get valuable insights, learn and improve.

We broke the launch into three phases:

  • Mobile private beta

  • Scanner integration open beta

  • General availability

Shipping the first version of the app in just 90 days was a huge milestone.
Running a closed beta helped us test early, fix issues fast, and make confident decisions based on real feedback.

Testing and improving

Running a closed beta helped us test early, fix issues fast, and make confident decisions based on real feedback.

Once we knew the beta was ready to scale, we redesigned the information architecture from the ground up and carefully tested the new structure to ensure it worked for our existing users—not just new ones.

Once the scanner experience was solid, we rolled out the selling features and merged everything into one app—bringing inventory and sales together in a single, seamless tool for retail teams. The response was overwhelmingly positive—zero negative feedback and genuine excitement from customers.

Fast testing, fast learning

That’s me on the way to a nearby shopping mall—with the beta app in my pocket and a full list of questions in my head. In just one day, we ran 7 interviews, spotted key usability issues, and made quick improvements based on real feedback.

Design

Make system work for you

One of the biggest challenges at the start was working with Lightspeed’s design system, Helios.

While it was suitable for web, it didn’t feel modern or native on mobile.

I partnered with a system designer from Georgia, and together we built a more mobile-first design system—tailored for both iOS and Android.

In just a few months, we delivered:

  • A full set of native components for both platforms

  • Clear, practical documentation for designers and developers

Today, thanks to this foundation, any designer working in this space can move faster and create better-looking, platform-appropriate interfaces.
